It's Not All Black and White...There Are Some Gray Areas!

As I wrap up the last of three posts on colors for rooms, we explore some old favorites. The colors, black, white, and gray, don’t really have any hue – no undertones of red, yellow, blue, or green. However, each of them creates its own drama and that’s why a lot of designers use them in rooms.

How many of you would paint an entire room black? You’d have to be pretty brave to do so. Black is sleek and sophisticated and enlivens other colors. Touches of black in a room can be energizing. Using too much black in a room can be oppressive. For best results use black to accent other colors such as in picture frames, mirrors, on lamp bases or shades, in accessory pieces, flooring, and countertops. Some designers believe that you should always have at least one thing black in a room to ground it.

White symbolizes purity, innocence, light, crispness, and coolness. It represents sterility, cleanliness, sharpness, and openness. It causes a lower pulse rate, blood pressure, respiration, heart rate and blink frequency than almost all colors except blue. Personally, I’m not a fan of white rooms; I’ve got to have lots of color surrounding me. At this age, I’m always trying to stay awake! (LOL) However, good rooms for white decor are guest rooms, entryways, master bedrooms, and bathrooms.

Gray is calming, timeless, practical, solid and can mix well with any color. You’ve probably seen it recently paired with yellow or pink. It is a perfect neutral and that’s why lots of designers gravitate toward it as a background color. If your room has lots of windows, gray can complement the natural light by adding a sophisticated tone. Good rooms for gray are living rooms, entry ways, and bedrooms.
